Last night, my nephew hung out at our house for a few hours. He showed us some pictures that he had recently drawn. I was really impressed by the quality of the drawings and asked how he learned to draw them so quickly. He told us he learned by watching a YouTube channel called Art for Kids Hub. He said they had videos showing viewers how to draw all kinds of cartoon characters, animals and more.
I didn’t really think anything else about it until later when my 9-year-old came to me with two clipboards and some paper. He asked if I could pull up Art for Kids Hub on my phone so we could draw something. In all honesty, he would have probably done it without me but I removed YouTube from his tablet (I’ll save the story for another time).
I pulled up the Art for Kids Hub channel on my phone and we quickly decided to draw a Minion (a character from the “Despicable Me” movies). I love Minions! We sat on the couch and spent the next 20 minutes watching the video and drawing our own Minions.
Here’s the video we watched:
Here are our drawings:
You can see from the picture above that Camden’s Minion was much better than mine. In my defense, I was holding my phone so we could both see it and I definitely didn’t think I’d be posting pictures on my blog.
Today, I pulled up the Art for Kids Hub YouTube channel again so I could learn more about it. I found out that it was started by Rob, a father of three. He started the channel to share his family activities with others. In his videos, Rob is drawing a character and has one of his kids right next to him learning at the same time. The camera’s view is from the top down so you can see both of the drawings as they happen. The videos are about 15 minutes long so they’re the perfect length for kids’ attention spans. They are really well done.
I loved the experience of drawing with my son. I used to draw all the time. I guess I stopped drawing while I was in college and moved onto other things. On occasion I’ll draw with the kids but most of the time, I channel my creativity through this blog, LEGO and making things out of wood.
Throughout the years, I’ve tried to encourage my kids to draw and be creative whenever possible. They are typically more interested in playing video games or their tablets. My wife and I are always looking for fun and “learning” activities we can do with our kids.
I think we found a new activity that the family can do together. I can definitely say that we’ll be spending more time drawing together and using Art for Kids Hub to spend good family time together. I really appreciate what Rob and his family are doing. I think you will too.
If you’re looking for something fun to do with your kids, you should check out Art for Kids Hub. I’ve included all the links below. Let me know what you think.
